What is ACSU?

Awesome Cyber Security University (ACSU) is a GitHub repo of curated TryHackMe rooms oriented as free course “curriculum” of Blue Team and Red Team subject areas. The courses can help beginners and experienced professionals alike, and it covers a wide range of topics, including ethical hacking, penetration testing, network security, and more.

What to Like

The course list is completely free and can be curated and added to over time. Second, it progressively introduces you to concepts starting with introductory concepts and getting more advanced as the rooms progress. The courses are a deep dive into SOC, Red Team, and Blue Team concepts.

Course Structure

The course has three tracks with several sections in each:

  • Introduction – General technical concepts and cybersecurity fundamentals
  • Red Team
    • Tooling
    • Crypto & Hashes
    • Web
    • Reverse Engineering & Pwn
    • PrivEsc – Privilege Escalation

Things to look out for

While ACSU is a great resource for learning about cybersecurity, it is important to keep in mind that it is not a replacement for formal education or experience. The platform is designed to provide a foundation in cybersecurity, but it is not intended to be a complete training program. You will need a TryHackMe free membership to get started.

The courses are heavily oriented toward Security Operations Center (SOC) type of work, but cybersecurity is a much wider field than just that. So you may need to review additional resources to get a full baseline of cybersecurity knowledge. Also, some of the courses are fairly technical, so you may have to do extra study/research if you come across concepts you aren’t familiar with. Finally, the repo is quite extensive, but you will always need to stay up on the latest TTPs, tool stacks specific to the company you’re working with, and how frequently this stays updated.

Who Can Most Benefit

ACSU is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn about cybersecurity. However, the courses are particularly well-suited for the following groups of people:

  • Beginners: ACSU is a great place to start if you are new to cybersecurity. The platform offers a comprehensive introduction to the field, and it covers all of the basics.
  • Self-Learners: ACSU is a great option for self-learners. The platform is self-paced, and it offers a variety of resources to help you learn at your own pace.
  • Cross-training: If you work in another area of cybersecurity, such as GRC or in a BISO liaison type of role, this can teach you SOC concepts and improve your technical knowledge.

Conclusion

Awesome Cyber Security University is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn about cybersecurity. The repo contains courses that are free to use, comprehensive, and well-organized. If you are interested in learning about cybersecurity, I encourage you to check out ACSU.
